The Partnership for Skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology (PASET) is a vital, African-led initiative working to bridge the skills gap in applied sciences, engineering, and technology (ASET) across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This is essential for driving socio-economic transformation in the region.

The Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (Rsif) is PASET’s flagship program, dedicated to nurturing PhD students, post-doctoral scientists, and universities in SSA. The goal? To create world-class training, research, and innovation environments that uplift the entire region.

Scholarship Opportunities

This call offers 20 scholarships, with 16 reserved for Kenyan nationals under PASET’s 80/20 rule for contributing countries. The remaining 4 are open to nationals from other sub-Saharan African countries.

Duration

The PhD Scholarship is designed to last between 3 to 4 years, during which scholars will spend 6-12 months at an international partner university, research institute, or private company, gaining invaluable experience.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for this opportunity, you must:

  • Be a citizen of any sub-Saharan African country.
  • Hold a master’s degree relevant to the Rsif fields of study.
  • Meet the specific admission requirements of the Rsif African Host University (AHU) where the PhD program is based.
  • Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
  • Be ready to enroll full-time in a PhD program at an Rsif AHU for the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Not hold another PhD scholarship when applying for the Rsif PhD scholarship.
  • Be willing to spend 6-12 months in a ‘sandwich’ training program at an international partner university, research institute, or private company.
  • Be committed to a research topic that aligns with and contributes to national or regional development in Africa.

Special consideration will be given to women and young academic faculty members who have not yet earned a PhD.

What the Scholarship Covers

This scholarship is designed to support your journey, covering:

  • University tuition fees and research costs.
  • A monthly living allowance for your time at the Rsif AHU and during your international placement.
  • Round-trip travel from your home country to the Rsif AHU.
  • Round-trip travel from the Rsif AHU to the International Partner Institute.
  • Visas and student permits.
  • Annual medical and personal accident insurance.

What’s Not Covered

While this scholarship is comprehensive, it does not cover:

  • Additional support for family members, such as children or spouses.
  • Extra return tickets to your home country for personal reasons.
  • Application costs to AHUs, including certification and verification of certificates.

How to Apply

  • Only complete applications submitted online will be considered. Please note that applications submitted via email or hard copy will not be accepted.
  • All applications will undergo plagiarism screening, and any evidence of plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
