The African Leadership Institute (AFLI) stands out for its commitment to nurturing visionary and strategic leaders across Africa.

Its flagship program, the prestigious Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship, is a unique opportunity designed to cultivate exceptional leaders from all sectors of society.

Partnering with Oxford University, this program is awarded annually to 20-25 distinguished candidates nominated from across the continent.

About the Program

The Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship (ATLP) offers a comprehensive leadership learning experience with a focus on African leadership in a global context.

This 5-month, part-time program is conducted in collaboration with Oxford University’s Saïd Business School.

The program includes modules in Africa and Oxford, blending African and global perspectives essential for future African leaders.

Eligibility and Nomination

  • Nominations Required: Candidates must be nominated by a senior figure within their community or organization.
  • Nomination Form: The nominator needs to submit a detailed nomination on the official Nomination Form. The competition for the fellowship is intense, with AFLI receiving over 300 nominations for the 17-22 fellowships available.
  • Age Criteria: For the 2025 Tutu Fellowship, candidates must be between 30 and 40 years old as of April 30, 2025. Direct applications are not accepted without prior nomination.

Benefits

  • Workshops: The ATLP includes two nine-day workshops—one in South Africa, typically in April, and another at Oxford University and in London in September. Additional tasks are assigned between workshops, manageable outside of regular work hours.
  • Coverage: The fellowship covers all program costs, including accommodation, tuition, and subsistence.
  • Graduation and Network: Upon completion, participants graduate as Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellows and join the AFLI network. This network offers opportunities for dialogue on leadership, strategic issues, and civic engagement.
