Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2025/2026 for Studying in Hong Kong

Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme! This esteemed program, established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, is designed to attract some of the brightest minds from around the globe to pursue their PhD studies at top universities in Hong Kong.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is available to new full-time PhD students applying to any of the following eight universities in Hong Kong. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what your previous work experience is, or your background—everyone is welcome to apply:

• City University of Hong Kong
• Hong Kong Baptist University
• Lingnan University
• The Chinese University of Hong Kong
• The Education University of Hong Kong
• The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
• The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
• The University of Hong Kong

To be considered, you should showcase outstanding academic achievements, strong research potential, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership qualities.

What’s Included?

The fellowship offers an annual stipend of HK$337,200 (about US$43,230) and a travel allowance of HK$14,000 (about US$1,790) per year for research and conferences.

This support is available for up to three years. For those who need more time to finish their PhD, additional help might be provided by your chosen university. Check with the universities directly for more information.

Just a heads-up: Hong Kong universities generally start their academic year in September.

How to Apply

To apply, start by submitting an Initial Application online through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES) by December 1, 2024, 12:00:00 Hong Kong Time, to get your HKPFS Reference Number. Once you have this, you can apply for PhD admission to your preferred universities.

You can choose up to two programs or departments at one or two universities for your PhD study under the HKPFS for 2025/26. Make sure you meet the admission requirements of the universities and programs you’re applying to.
