Call for Applications: OIST Internship Program in Japan 2025

Applications for the OIST Internship Program are now being accepted from interested and qualified applicants globally.

As a Research Intern, students enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, or recently completed programs who wish to pursue a PhD at OIST can participate in instructional activities at OIST.

Through our Research Intern program in STEM subjects, the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) Graduate School provides possibilities for education and research.

An internship is a brief placement that allows students to assist with OIST research projects while also gaining experience in a particular laboratory or learning a particular method under the guidance of a professor.

The fully paid OIST Japan Internship program 2025 offers stipends, housing, flights, and other allowances in addition to the chance for students to master a specific method or obtain experience in a particular laboratory.

Eligibility Requirements

• be in the final 2 years of the undergraduate or Masters programs in universities, colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools in Japan or overseas, or graduates of such institutions.
• have approval from their home institution.
• have appropriate academic background to your desired host unit(s) at OIST.

Benefits

OIST will provide the following support for successful applicants.

• Internship Allowance
  • JPY 2,400 per working day (Non-taxable and weekends excluded)
• Commuting Allowance

• Travel Expenses
  • One direct round-trip air ticket (travel date will be closest date to the term of placement)
• Accommodation
  • Furnished apartment on or off campus

OIST will also assist in visa acquisition, insurance procedures, and local registration. This will only be provided for the student. Therefore, this does not pertain to the dependents and family members of the student.

Duration of the internship is typically from 2 to 6 months.

Required Documents for OIST Internship Program in Japan 2025

To apply for the OIST Internship Program, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

• Curriculum Vitae Sheet
• 400 words Personal Statement
• Academic Transcripts (In English translation, if required)
• Recommendation Letter
• ID Photo

How to Apply 

• Applications to the program must be made through the online form.
• You can only submit your application after at least one recommendation letter is received in the application system.
• You will receive an auto-notification that your application has been received.
• Following the application period, applications will be screened and selection will be completed.
• The result announcement will be posted on your application platform 3 months after the application deadline.
• You will receive a notification when the result is posted.
• Following final confirmation of internship offers, all necessary arrangements will be made, in cooperation with the interns.
• Your cooperation is required for timely completion of logistics to begin the internship, including possible visa preparations and other necessary Japanese government documentation.
