The UNESCO AfriMAB GRÓ LRT Land Restoration Fellowship makes this a reality for dedicated individuals passionate about restoring our planet’s ecosystems.
What the Fellowship Covers:

What to Expect:
This fellowship is open to two candidates from African biosphere reserves actively involved in restoration efforts. You’ll be hosted at the Agricultural University of Iceland, where you’ll immerse yourself in a combination of classroom learning, practical hands-on training, and field trips.
How the Training Works:
- First 12 Weeks: You’ll dive into foundational and specialized courses, while also getting your hands dirty with real-world practice and field trips.
- Final 12 Weeks: This is where you shine! You’ll work on a personalized project that aligns with your professional background and the needs of your workplace.
At the end of the six months, you’ll receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Ecosystem Restoration and Sustainable Land Management (30 ECTS), which you can proudly bring back to your community and apply in your work.

Are You Eligible for the 2025 Fellowship?
To qualify, you need to:
- Be fluent in English (you’ll use it every day for work and communication)
- Be under 40 years old
- Have at least one year of experience working in a biosphere reserve in an area related to land restoration
- Hold a university degree in a related field (e.g., ecology, natural sciences, environmental management) or have extensive experience in the field
- Be actively contributing to ecosystem restoration in your current role
Even if you don’t have a degree but have significant hands-on experience, you might still be considered!
What Your Institution Needs to Do:
For this fellowship, your institution needs to support your growth by:
- Granting you a six-month study leave to attend the program in Iceland
- Continuing your salary and benefits while you’re away
- Welcoming you back to your position after you complete your training
Fellowship Benefits:

- A stipend to cover all your living expenses while in Iceland
The next training program starts in March 2025 and lasts for six months, giving you plenty of time to prepare for this adventure.
